Although laundry renovations may seem simple, we're here to tell you to pour some extra time into planning a new laundry space.

If you are renovating a laundry room, you probably have a well-formed idea for the design and structure of the place. However, you can do much more than the basics and convert the laundry room into a stylish space in your house.

So, we've got some chic ideas to elevate the functional space into a user-friendly yet designer room.

Five Essential Features For Every Laundry Renovation

1. Appliances

The first thing to finalise is the washing machine and the dryer, and work your way from there. Deciding upon which appliance model to select depends on the size of the room, budget, and unit style. When space is limited, investing in a dual-function washer and dryer would be sensible, which takes less room.

If space is not a problem, indulge in two separate appliances for each function. Additionally, you can select between top-loading washing machines and front-loading ones. If you plan on adding a bench on top, a front-loading washer will suit the laundry room better.

2. Cabinets And Storage Units

Renovating a laundry space may feel incomplete without adding storage units and cabinetry that holds all the essentials for washing clothes. Plan a layout first and consider whether a flat pack or custom-made cabinet will be required. If a full-fledged cabinetry layout is not your style at the moment, try adjusting a small vertical cupboard in a corner.

With this cupboard, at least you can hide utility items like brooms and vacuum cleaners away. If you are someone who can keep the storage area neat, you may not need to keep the cleaning things in cabinets at all. Instead, you can design layers of open shelves to place everything directly.

The only downside of this arrangement is that all the items may collect dust easily, and regular cleaning will become mandatory. Another option is doing away with all permanent cabinets and shelves and replacing them with baskets and attractive boxes. You can move these light boxes around whenever necessary, and there are several stylish options available for this option.

3. Lighting

Believe it or not, even if you make drastic changes to the laundry room, bad lighting can ruin the effect and render your designs invisible. Besides, doing the laundry in a dim room is challenging, and you won't be able to see what you're doing. Not to mention the strain on your eyes trying to check whether the clothes are clean or not.

Consider adding lights under the cabinet along with the regular ceiling lights to prevent the formation of shadows. If possible, construct your new laundry room in a part of the house that receives plenty of natural lighting. If that's not feasible, stick to simple lights and experiment with downlights if you want something fancier.

4. Floors

Walking on slippery floors of a laundry room is risky, and the wrong type of flooring will end up causing you a bunch of problems. For instance, a floor that isn't water-resistant will get damaged by water spills easily. Also, the floor tiles need to be durable enough for traffic, even if a few people use the laundry room in a day.

Wooden flooring is susceptible to water damage and discolouration, while ceramic or porcelain tiles are strong and waterproof. Thus, the latter will suit the laundry room better, along with options like vinyl planks or tiles, which are the more economical option.

5. Mod Cons Or Functional Features

While you are at it, include mod cons like in-built laundry baskets, towel drying racks, ironing boards, and hanging rails. These small additions will add up to create the most functional laundry room, ideal for a modern home.

6. Sink

Basic steel sinks are a thing of the past, and you have no reason to resurrect them when there are plenty of stylish options available. While selecting a sink, ensure it is deep enough to allow for handwashing of small clothing items and towels as and when required.

However, nowadays, washing machines let out wastewater through a systematic drain system, and sink use is less frequent. Thus, if you are to install a sink, you might as well go for an aesthetically pleasing one made of porcelain or smooth granite.

Laundry Renovation Essentials

Ultimately, you can take your laundry room renovation to the next level by adding some or all of these essential features. Once these systems are in place, you probably won't need to make any further changes for decades to come.

So, while the upfront cost may seem high, consider the renovation an investment to create a more functional and trendy laundry room. Just remember to speak to your builder and obtain any required permits before starting.
